New technique alleviates painful bone metastases, study suggests

May 31, 2013 ? A high-dose of ultrasound targeted to painful bone metastases appears to quickly bring patients relief, and with largely tolerable side effects, according to new research presented by Fox Chase Cancer Center scientists at the 49th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology on Monday, June 3.

During the procedure, known as MR-guided focused ultrasound, doctors direct a concentrated beam of energy to specific nerve endings that are causing pain in bone metastases. These patients typically have a significant amount of discomfort -- half of study participants rated their pain at least a 7 out of 10 -- but within a handful of days, most said they felt significant relief.

Although Fox Chase patients received local anesthesia during the procedure, the most commonly reported side effect was pain -- which can often be alleviated with additional anesthesia, says study author Joshua Meyer, MD, attending physician in the Radiation Oncology Department at Fox Chase. "That's temporary pain, which is gone as soon as the procedure is over," he says. "The whole reason we're doing the procedure is for the pain relief that comes afterwards. And that's relatively quick -- we see a response by a day or so, and within three days of the procedure most patients are reporting a significant improvement."

Specifically, 67% of the 107 treated patients said their pain was "much improved" after the treatment, and that relief continued through the end of the three-month study. In comparison, among a group of 35 patients that received a "sham" treatment -- they entered the machine but did not receive the intervention -- only 20% reported some pain relief, Meyer and his colleagues reported.

During the procedure, patients enter into an MRI machine, which allows clinicians to direct a cone of ultrasound energy at specific, targeted bone sites that are causing pain. The MRI also acts as a thermometer to measure the temperature deep within the body created by the high dose of energy, which generates enough heat to burn the nerve endings that are causing pain.

Although pain relief was durable until the end of the study at 90 days, it's not clear how much longer the pain relief lasts, says Meyer. "We've had reports of patients experiencing pain relief up to a year or more outside of the study."

Typically, patients with bone metastases are treated with radiation, which shrinks the bone cancer that is putting pressure on nerve endings, causing pain. This technique also treats the cancer (MR-guided focused ultrasound may not), but often takes weeks before patients experience pain relief, and not all will respond, says Meyer. In addition, others may not be eligible to receive additional radiation, if they have limited bone marrow function, for instance, he notes. The latest research didn't compare the effectiveness of the ultrasound technique to radiation, but the response to ultrasound appears "within the same ballpark of that in previous studies with radiation."

MR-guided focused ultrasound has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and is available at Fox Chase Cancer Center, as well as a handful of other facilities around the country.

Co-authors on the study include Mark Hurwitz, MD, Pejman Ghanouni, MD, and Suzanne LeBlang, MD.

Epigenetic biomarkers may predict if a specific diet and exercise regimen will work

May 30, 2013 ? Would you be more likely to try a diet and exercise regimen if you knew in advance if it would actually help you lose weight? Thanks to a new report published in the June 2013 issue of The FASEB Journal, this could become a reality. In the report, scientists identify five epigenetic biomarkers in adolescents that were associated with a better weight loss at the beginning of a weight loss program. Not only could this could ultimately help predict an individual's response to weight loss intervention, but it may offer therapeutic targets for enhancing a weight loss program's effects.

"Successful obesity treatment during adolescence could reduce morbidity at later stages of life and lead to a better quality of life," said Amelia Mart?, Ph.D., Pharm. D., co-author of this study from the Department of Nutrition, Food Science, Physiology and Toxicology at the University of Navarra in Pamplona, Spain. "It is crucial to find new markers for obesity treatment. Here, we describe five putative epigenetic biomarkers that could help to predict the response to a weight loss intervention in obese adolescents."

To make this discovery, Mart? and colleagues first performed a global methylation assay in 24 adolescents who had the best and worst response to the EVASYON weight loss program, and then expanded the sample to include 83 more adolescents. Researchers measured an epigenetic marker, DNA methylation levels, in obese adolescents from a blood sample at baseline and again at the end of the 10-week program. Participants were then divided into two groups (high and low responders) according to the weight loss achieved. The researchers found that the baseline DNA methylation levels of five epigenetic markers were associated with better weight loss response. This EVASYON program is a lifestyle and nutritional educational weight loss program that includes a multidisciplinary team of nutritionists, physiotherapists, psychologists and pediatricians. EVASYON was conducted in five Spanish cities: Granada, Madrid, Pamplona, Santander and Zaragoza.

"If you've ever wondered why some people seem to do so well on a diet and exercise plan and other fail so miserably, then now we know that the way that genes express themselves (via epigenetics) plays an important role," said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal. "This report moves us a step closer when we will be able to prescribe a weight loss program tailored to more than just the lifestyle and conditioning level of the patient, but also to his or her particular genetic and epigenetic profile."

Scientists Recover Wooly Mammoth Blood

The half life of all DNA is 521 years.

Did you even READ that article?

"After cell death, enzymes start to break down the bonds between the nucleotides that form the backbone of DNA, and micro-organisms speed the decay. In the long run, however, reactions with water are thought to be responsible for most bond degradation. Groundwater is almost ubiquitous, so DNA in buried bone samples should, in theory, degrade at a set rate."

So, that 'half life' is for buried bones in fairly specific situations. It doesn't apply everywhere.

Best part of all, is that story you linked to has its own related stories, and the first link is another story where they recovered DNA from 19,000 year old eggshells.

The second link is a story about sequencing the DNA from 100,000+ year old polar bears. Where the 'cold DRY' environment allows DNA to be preserved.

Fantasy baseball Pitching Report: Zimmermann dominating in D.C.

Jordan Zimmermann is walking just 1.1 batters per nine innings, which is third-best in the league.

Stephen Dunn/Getty Images

There are few teams in the majors on which Jordan Zimmermann would somehow get overlooked; however, that's exactly what's happening in Washington, where Stephen Strasburg and Gio Gonzalez hog the headlines. While Strasburg has thrown the ball very well this season and has looked like his dominant self in his last two turns, Zimmermann has been the best pitcher on the team through the first two months of the season.

WEEK 9 PREP: Fantasy baseball Weekly Planner | Waiver Wire | Pitching Report | Injury Report

In 10 starts, Zimmerman is 8-2 with a 1.71 ERA and 0.87 WHIP. It's hard for a pitcher with an ERA less than 2.00 to match that with his FIP, so Zimmermann's 2.79 FIP doesn't mean he's pitching worse than his ERA suggests. The reason his FIP is a full run higher than his ERA is likely because FIP puts a premium on strikeouts and Zimmermann's fanning a career low 5.62 batters per nine innings. So how is Zimmermann having the best year of his career even though his strikeouts are way down? Fewer walks and more ground balls have been the two keys.

Zimmermann's 51.1 percent ground-ball rate would easily be a career high if he's able to sustain it for the entire season. (In his two previous full seasons in the majors, his ground-ball rates were 39.4 percent and 43.4 percent.) In 2011, he walked 1.73 batters per nine innings, and last year, the rate jumped to 1.98 batters. This season, he's walking just 1.1 batters every nine innings, the third-best rate among starters, trailing only Bartolo Colon and Adam Wainwright. Hitters are also hitting more ground balls and walking less -- and striking out less, for that matter -- against Zimmerman this season, which make a great formula for pitching deeper into games. He's gone at least seven innings in eight of his 10 starts, including two complete games. In his first two seasons in the league combined, he pitched at least seven innings 14 times. He has been very efficient with his pitches simply by getting a ton of value out of his two best offerings: his fastball and slider.

The slider has always been an important pitch for Zimmermann. This year, it has been one of the best pitches in baseball, as batters are hitting just .173/.228/.250 against Zimmermann's slider, according to Fangraphs. The pitch has a 44.4 percent ground-ball rate and 14.2 percent swinging-strike rate. His fastball averages 93.6 MPH, and hitters have beaten it into the ground 53.5 percent of the time. Essentially, he's owning hitters with pinpoint command of two pitches. His ERA will likely climb a bit as the season goes on, but there's nothing fluky about what he has done this season. He can definitely finish the year as a top-10 fantasy pitcher.

Starting pitcher barometer

Who's up?

? Stephen Strasburg, Washington Nationals -- Last time we discussed Strasburg in this space, we pointed out that even though he had yet to have a truly Strasburg-ian run of starts, that he was pitching very well and it was just a matter of time. In his last three starts, he has allowed just three earned runs while striking out 20 batters in 23 innings. His ERA for the season is down to 2.49 and his WHIP is at a cool 1.06. If an opportunity existed to buy him low after his seemingly slow start, it no doubt has passed.

? Francisco Liriano, Pittsburgh Pirates -- Liriano is another guy we've talked about here recently, but now that he has made three strong starts, he warrants another mention and a bump up the rest-of-season rankings. He has thrown 18 innings in his three starts combined, allowing just two earned runs and striking out 23 batters against six walks. In his last time out against the Cubs, he tossed seven shutout innings, surrendering two hits and striking out nine. It's not a surprise that he has taken to the National League so well. What is a bit of a surprise, even in this small sample, is that he's been able to cut back on his walks to so significant a degree. He should be universally owned.

? Homer Bailey, Cincinnati Reds -- Bailey hit a tiny rough patch in back-to-back starts against the Cardinals and Braves, two of the best teams in the league. However, after those two combined to tag him for eight runs in 10.1 innings, he has turned in three dominant outings against the Marlins, Phillies and Cubs. In those three starts, he has given up four runs and struck out 21 batters in 22 innings. He makes a good target in trade talks since he can make a major impact for a team that needs help in the rotation, but isn't a guy whose current owner would refuse to part with him.

Who's down?

? CC Sabathia, New York Yankees -- The Rays rocked Sabathia his last time out, getting to him for seven runs on seven hits in seven innings. In his last three starts, Sabathia has surrendered 12 earned runs on an astounding 28 hits across 19.2 innings. At this point, his decreased velocity isn't just a symptom of starting the season slowly. The high-80s are his new normal. Despite his recent struggles, Sabathia could still fetch you a nice return. He has plenty of value on the market, but he's no longer a fantasy ace.

? Jeremy Guthrie, Kansas City Royals -- The honeymoon had to come to an end eventually, and it appears that eventuality has manifested itself in Guthrie's last three outings. In that stretch, he's 0-3 and has been rocked around for 17 earned runs on 24 hits in 19.1 innings. He has just four strikeouts against seven walks after fanning more than two batters for every walk in his first seven starts of the year. This is closer to the Guthrie we've seen in years past, so owners should reassess what they expect from him for the rest of the season.

What a relief

? Chris Perez struggled for his second straight appearance Sunday before leaving the game after a visit from the trainer. The Indians placed him on the DL with shoulder soreness Monday, so he'll be out for at least the next two weeks. They weren't ever in a position to set up their bullpen for a save opportunity in a loss to the Reds Monday, so we're still guessing at who might fill the closer's chair with Perez out. The bet here is that Joe Smith wins out over Vinnie Pestano. The latter has a better track record over the last few seasons, but Smith has been much better this year, posting a 1.06 ERA, 2.77 FIP and 18 strikeouts in 17 innings. If you're in the saves market, Smith makes a strong addition right now

? Joel Peralta remains available in a majority of leagues, while Fernando Rodney continues to struggle. Joe Maddon hasn't shown any hints that would suggest he's ready to make a change, but he might have his hand forced before long. Rodney has been scored on in four of his last five appearances, three of which ended in blown saves. In two of those games, he entered the game with a lead of more than one run. Meanwhile, Peralta has been one of the most effective relievers in the majors this year, compiling a 1.93 ERA, 2.46 FIP and 0.99 WHIP in 23.1 innings, while striking out nearly 10.5 batters per nine innings. Go ahead and get Peralta. He'll be the closer in due time.

? Finally, Marlins manager Mike Redmond has seen enough of Steve Cishek in the ninth. Well, more accurately, he's seen enough of only Cishek in the ninth. He'll still get chances, but we've got a full-fledged closer committee in Miami, with Chad Qualls and Mike Dunn joining Cishek in the conversation. This is a nightmare for owners speculating for saves. First of all, the Marlins aren't going to get a ton of save opportunities, so when they do, any of the three are liable to get the call. If you're absolutely desperate for saves, I can see going after Qualls or Dunn. Qualls is a nose ahead of Dunn in my book, simply because Dunn will need to remain available to face lefties in any late-game situations. Add them if you dare -- or if you absolutely must.

IRS Demanded Tea Party Explain Why They Didn?t Campaign For Democrat In New Mexico Governor Race?

Of course the IRS made no such demands from liberal groups.

(CNSNews.com) ? The Internal Revenue Service,?in a letter dated November 16, 2011, asked the Albuquerque Tea Party why it didn?t host a ?candidate rally? in 2010 for the lone Democratic gubernatorial candidate in New Mexico after it had hosted a ?question and answer forum? for the Republican candidates.

On the Democrat side, then-Lt. Gov. Diane Denish was running for New Mexico governor unopposed, but five Republicans were running in the primary for the opportunity to face Denish in November.

On page four of the IRS letter, question 8 asked the Albuquerque Tea Party:

?In describing your Event Rallies you stated that you hosted a question and answer forum with the GOP Primary Candidates for Governor of the state, and that not all GOP candidates attended. You stated that since there was only one candidate in the Democratic primary, there was no comparison to be made in the primary.?

In Question 8a of the letter, the IRS directed the Albuquerque group to ?Describe in detail the GOP Event Rally, including questions asked, and state the reasons you did not have a candidate rally for the lone Democratic candidate.?

Why I Love Playing Rummy Card Game Online | - Facebook N World

I have always loved playing card games and I have seen card games being played in almost every family that I know. Kids play sath-aath card game, teen-do-paanch, Rang milavni and as they grow, they graduate to games like rummy, chokdi, 28 (also called 29), teen patti and lastly if they get some international exposure, poker, blackjack becomes a card game of their liking.Playing Rummy Card Game

In India, Card games have been popular since centuries and among all popular card games, rummy game is considered as one of the most interesting and liked games. Rummy is quick to start, as it requires just one pack of cards and 2 players but the amount of excitement that it delivers is just amazing. Internet penetration in India is increasing rapidly and India might be a country with most Internet users. And, with the increasing Internet penetration comes the online version of rummy card game which is now changing the entire world of online card games. Games24x7.com is an online rummy website where one can play rummy online against lacs of players in India and its damn easy; just hook up to your Internet, create a rummy account and start playing free rummy or rummy for cash.

The rummy that Games24x7.com offers is the traditional Indian rummy played in India i.e. 13 cards rummy with a single pack of card and one joker. Internationally, there are several forms of rummy games available like Gin Rummy, Oklahoma Rummy, Kalooki, Rummy 500 etc. All of these rummy are popular games but when it comes to India, only 13 cards rummy with a single pack of cards is available to play for real money.

Though rummy is a game of skill and needs smartness to win rummy games, learning rummy rules and rummy tricks is not a rocket science either.

Once you are friendly with the rules, you yourself would be able to device some rummy strategies of your own and would find ways on how to win rummy games. And, the more you would play you will find many people using similar strategies while playing rummy and its really easy to connect with other rummy players via rummy circles, rummy chat and other social media elements offered via this website.

The objective of an Online rummy game is to arrange the 13 cards in sets and/or sequences. A player starts with these 13 cards and then picks and throws one card and thats how sequences and sets are made. One card is picked either from the draw pile or the discard pile and after using that card one card is discarded which goes into the discard pile. The first players who makes the sets and/or sequences as per the rummy rules wins the rummy game. To win, the 14th card has the be put face-down on the discard pile and then the player has the display the sets and sequences.

If you are new to playing rummy online, I would recommend playing a few free rummy games and the rummy website Games24x7.com offers unlimited free rummy games and which I think is the best way to learn rummy. I also played a lot of free rummy games on this website and after getting comfortable I have now started to play rummy for cash and am able to win some decent amount too ;)

LG officially announces white Nexus 4, on sale from May 29

Android Central

On sale beginning in Hong Kong, to follow in Asia, Europe, Middle East and North America in coming weeks

The Unicorn that suddenly thrust itself into public view in recent weeks is now officially official. LG has announced that the white variant of the Nexus 4 will be released to the world on May 29 in Hong Kong. After this, in the "coming weeks" we shall see it roll out globally, though no specific dates are available for other regions at this point.

And that's about all she wrote. The white Nexus 4 still comes with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, and there's no mention of any new storage options or even where we'll be able to buy it. Since this announcement has come from LG and not Google, there's a possibility -- at least to begin with -- that this isn't Play Store bound. If it doesn't get into the Play Store, we're not likely to see this version hit the same price point as the black one, so we'll keep our collective fingers crossed on that one.

David Sable: Nevermind the How... What Do I Share With Thee?

How do I share with thee? Let me count the ways...

Facebook; Tumblr; Instagram; Pintrest; LinkedIn; Foursquare; Twitter; Google+; MySpace; Vine; Snapchat; Flickr; Orkut; StumbleUpon; Livestream; Wordpress; Reddit; YouTube; RenRen; Whatsapp; WeChat; Vk...

What do I share with thee and therein lays the question...

Once our only concern in sharing our deepest darkest secrets was whether or not our BFF had a big mouth or not.

Today, whether or not we actively share that secret, chances are that we have left enough digital clues for any respectable hacker or other to winkle it out given the reams of data that are collected about you by the channels we use to share.

Sharing is in our DNA -- it is a human trait -- and throughout history we have evolved newer and better and more efficient ways to share -- because it is what we do -- all of which brings us to the digital world that we live in where almost daily there is yet another new; quicker; more interesting and efficient way to share everything from your newest purchase to your most personal question and everything in between -- with text; pictures; video and even live.

I am obsessed with understanding sharing and the nexus of DNA and Digital and to that end my friend and teacher R'BH was kind enough to "learn" with me last week and taught me the following thoughts about sharing, which I have applied to my key question: What do I share with thee?

He broke sharing down into three categories -- three different ways to share -- and I found that each had resonance as we struggle with the what of sharing because of the digitally enhanced how.

  1. I share with you -- but I share on my terms alone -- meaning that you have to use what I share with you exactly as I do... exactly as I say.
  2. Think about that -- think about the digital "sharing" places that that won't let you in unless you agree to log-on; link-in or otherwise give up control over your own data stream...life...

  3. I share with you first and you are part of a group -- a community -- I have to make sure that how I have shared with you is clear to all and I am required to share with others in your group in the same way -- no one gets better preference or access.
  4. A different view -- the sharing is for the one with whom it is shared. If ownership is access than you have set the definition of ownership -- I can't auction or premium price or otherwise artificially change the essential relationship -- it is yours to use as you see fit, and whatever limitations attached to its use are purely a function of who you are -- not me, the original sharer.

  5. I share with a whole group -- give all access at the same time -- I can't change the relationship I have with all because one might want more.

A third view -- a community has formed -- they agree on a set of sharing principals. I can't change that arbitrarily -- we all agreed up-front no small print changes allowed later -- unless we all agree.

All of the above describe different models of digital engagement. Think about them -- think about how those models impact your life or not and what the future might look like if any of those models changed. Think about how those companies monetize and how much of that monetization is off of your back, so to speak.

The hierarchy of the models is interesting to me.

Model one is where we seem to have landed -- the dictatorship of sharing -- yet the third is, I believe, the model that created the Internet -- the WWW -- the digital world we live in. And the second, wedged in between, is where most would like to be, I think, but its principles are no longer followed.

The vision was that if we shared information and knowledge through an open and egalitarian sharing, we would increase the wisdom of the world. Yet over the years the small print appeared and when we weren't looking the game changed and changed again. And wisdom became less important than somehow monetizing the sharing.

I really do believe that it's critical to understand the what of sharing and to apply the highest standards of business ethics and human morality to it.

Bottom line: all Digibabble aside -- the whole enterprise of the Digital Universe exists to share because we are social and not the other way around. Most importantly, sharing has to be win/win. Listen...

"If you have a candle, the light won't glow any dimmer if I light yours off of mine."
Steven Tyler

And there you have it. Digital sharing is all about lighting candles -- spreading the light. We all benefit -- or should. The goal is to have many candles to create lots of light -- not just one bonfire.

What do you think?

Original ?Ultimate Fighter? Forrest Griffin retires

After 26 fights and a key role in turning the UFC into the promotion it is today, Forest Griffin has retired. His decision was announced at the UFC 160 post-fight press conference.

"It's been a good eight years, I guess. Biggest thing I've learned ... when [UFC president] Dana White says retire otherwise you will blow your knee out," Griffin said at the press conference.

Griffin's last fight was a win over UFC Hall of Famer Tito Ortiz in July of 2012. Coincidentally, it was Ortiz's last bout before retirement. He won that fight by decision. His career included 19 wins, 7 losses and stint as the UFC light heavyweight champion.

What Griffin will always be remembered for is being one-half of a fight that catapulted the UFC into fame. He and Stephan Bonnar were finalists on the first season of the UFC's reality show, "The Ultimate Fighter." Their fight was a close, thrilling battle that played on Spike TV on April 9, 2005.

It was responsible for earning the UFC many fans, which helped earn bigger sponsors and television deals. Griffin won the decision, taking the title of the first "Ultimate Fighter," but both fighters were given contracts.

During the media scrum following the press conference, White said that Griffin and Bonnar will be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame together.

Griffin went on to be a force in the 205-lb. division, upsetting Pride star Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in 2007, then taking the belt from Quinton "Rampage" Jackson in July of 2008. He lost the belt to Rashad Evans that December.

White said Griffin will continue to have a role with the UFC.

NYPD investigating actress Bynes allegations

NEW YORK (AP) ? Internal Affairs officers on Saturday were looking into allegations made by actress Amanda Bynes that New York Police Department officers sexually assaulted her when she was charged with heaving a marijuana bong out the window of her 36th-floor Manhattan apartment.

The 27-year-old former child star first alleged during her arraignment on Friday that police illegally entered her apartment after being called to her midtown building. But in a Twitter message believed to be from the troubled actress posted Saturday, Bynes alleged that her arresting officer also sexually assaulted her.

"As it would with any such allegation, regardless of its credibility, IAB is investigating it," said the NYPD's chief spokesman, Paul Browne, referring to the internal affairs bureau.

The Twitter handle used to make the sexual assault allegations Saturday does not appear to be verified by the social network? but Bynes' friend, former Hollywood publicist Jonathan Jaxson, said Saturday the tweet was made from Bynes' account. Twitter did not immediately return a request for comment.

In court on Friday, the former "Hairspray" star made no mention of the sexual assault allegations, though she did complain of illegal entry to her apartment. She's been charged with reckless endangerment, attempted tampering with evidence and unlawful possession of marijuana.

A law enforcement official who spoke to the Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because of an ongoing investigation said the building manager was with officers at Bynes' apartment when they arrived Thursday night. The official said officers were kept waiting approximately five minutes before she opened the door to them. The same official said the building manager told internal affair investigators nothing untoward happened.

Bynes was released by Chief New York County Judge Neil Ross on her own recognizance because, Ross said, he did not believe her to be a flight risk. But in releasing her, Ross also issued a stern warning to Bynes, telling her not to get rearrested or miss any court dates. She's due back in court on July 9.

Attempts to reach Bynes' arraignment lawyer were unsuccessful Saturday evening.

Bynes rose to fame starring in Nickelodeon's "All That" and has also starred in several films, including 2010's "Easy A." But she has been in the news more recently because of several scrapes with the law and bizarre public behavior.

Bynes was arrested Thursday night after building officials called police to complain she was rolling a joint and smoking pot in the lobby. The officers went to her apartment where they saw heavy smoke and a bong sitting on the kitchen counter. They said she tossed the bong out the window in front of them, prosecutors said Friday.

Female suicide bomber injures 12 in Russian region

MAKHACHKALA, Russia (AP) ? A female suicide bomber identified as a widow of two killed Islamists blew herself up in the southern Russian region of Dagestan on Saturday injuring at least 12, including two children and five police officers, police said.

The bomber detonated an explosives-laden belt in the central square in the provincial capital, Makhachkala, Dagestan's police spokesman Vyacheslav Gasanov said.

The bomber was identified as Madina Alieva, 25, who married an Islamist who was killed in 2009 and then wedded another Islamic radical who was gunned down last year, police spokeswoman Fatina Ubaidatova said.

Since 2000, at least two dozen women, most of them from the Caucasus, have carried out suicide bombings in Russian cities and aboard trains and planes. All were linked to an Islamic insurgency that spread throughout Dagestan and the predominantly Muslim Caucasus region after two separatist wars in neighboring Chechnya.

The bombers are often called "black widows" in Russia because many are the widows, or other relatives, of militants killed by security forces. Islamic militants are believed to convince "black widows" that a suicide bombing will reunite them with their dead relatives beyond the grave.

Police said two of the people injured in the attack were in a critical condition. There were no details about the injured children.

The Tsarnaev brothers suspected of carrying out last month's Boston marathon bombings, are ethnic Chechens who lived in Dagestan before moving to the United States. Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the elder brother who was killed a shootout with police days after the April 15 bombings, spent six months in Dagestan in 2012.

Dagestan remains an epicenter of violence in the confrontation between radical Islamists and federal forces.

This week, a double explosion in Makhachkala killed four civilians and left 44 injured, while three security officers and three suspected militants have been killed in other incidents.

Islamists strive to create an independent Muslim state, or "emirate," in the Caucasus and parts of southern Russia with a sizable Muslim population.

Although Chechen separatists were battered almost a decade ago, Islamists continue to move through the region's mountains and forests with comparative ease despite security sweeps by federal forces and police under the control of local leaders loyal to the Kremlin.

Human rights groups say that abductions, torture and extrajudicial killings of young men suspected of militant links by Russian security forces have helped swell the rebels' ranks. Caucasus experts say that Islamists routinely extort money from government officials and businessmen and attack or kill those who refuse to pay.

Oregon teen accused of planning to attack school

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) ? An Oregon teenager intended to blow up his school in a plot "forged and inspired by the model of the Columbine shootings" and he will be charged with attempted aggravated murder, a prosecutor said late Saturday.

Grant Acord, 17, will be charged as an adult and also faces six counts of manufacturing and possessing a destructive device after investigators found six bombs in a secret compartment in his bedroom, said Benton County District Attorney John Haroldson.

Acord was taken to a juvenile jail Thursday night after police received a tip that the youth was making a bomb to blow up West Albany High School, located about 75 miles south of Portland.

He said Acord had written plans, a checklist and a specific timeline for the attack. The bombs investigators found included pipe bombs, Molotov cocktails, a Drano bomb and a napalm bomb, Haroldson said.

Police found no bombs during a search of the high school.

Haroldson declined to provide the specific date Acord allegedly planned to attack the school, but said it would be included in court paperwork to be filed after the Memorial Day weekend.

"That said there were also some indications that it could happen at any time, too," Haroldson said. "So you have - A -the methodical planning and then - B - I suppose he could get really excited about it and go early."

Acord is a junior. Haroldson said he's not aware that the youth had any major problems, such as a suspension, at school.

"In any case that you have a young person that in essence plans to take a video game approach to killing people at school, you have to take a close look at the mental health issues," he said. "And the process will certainly provide for that once he's represented by counsel."

Phone listings did not appear to be available for either of the boy's parents to reach them for comment Saturday.

The Associated Press was not able to determine who would represent the boy in court.

The district attorney said it did not appear the teen was targeting a specific person or group of people. He said Acord will likely be arraigned Tuesday in Benton County Circuit Court in Corvallis.

"I can't say enough about how lucky we are that there was an intervention," the district attorney said. "When I look at the evidence in the case, I shudder to think of what could have happened here."

(AP) ? David Beckham's soccer career is now officially over.

The veteran midfielder was not included in Paris Saint-Germain's squad to play at Lorient in Sunday's season-ending game, meaning his tearful farewell at the Parc des Princes last Saturday was Beckham's final match before retiring.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti had said last weekend Beckham was unlikely to play at Lorient, having bid an emotional adieu to fans in his last home game. Beckham received a standing ovation as he left the field last Saturday, having been involved in two of his team's goals in the 3-1 win against Brest.

It was his 14th game and fifth start since joining PSG in a surprise move on the last day of the transfer window, and he was appointed captain for the match.

Am. Samoa to keep flier miles of govt travelers

PAGO PAGO, American Samoa (AP) ? American Samoa plans to take away frequent flier miles from government workers who travel on behalf of the U.S. territory and use the loyalty points to help medical patients and students travel off the islands when necessary.

Hawaiian Airlines agreed to the plan that takes effect on June 1, American Samoa Gov. Lolo Matalasi Moliga said. The Honolulu-based airline is the only carrier connecting the unincorporated U.S. territory midway between Hawaii and New Zealand with the rest of the United States.

Moliga announced the policy this week in a memo to the territorial government's various agencies. He acknowledged some people might see the move as unfair but called it "morally wrong" for employees to get extra benefits from the privilege of traveling for the territory as a government employee.

"We have a moral responsibility to help out those of our people who, not by any fault of theirs, find themselves in situations where outside assistance is needed," Moliga said. "The added benefit provided by the frequent flier mileage award should be shared with those of our community who are truly impoverished and destitute."

American Samoa, made up of two small islands in the south Pacific slightly larger in area than Washington, D.C., budgeted nearly $6 million for government travel in fiscal 2013.

Tim Winship, editor and publisher of FrequentFlier.com, a website dedicated to the use of airline miles, said corporations and governments have sometimes considered keeping miles from employees. But he hasn't heard of any taking the idea as far as American Samoa has with its new policy.

Winship said the arrangement presents practical and moral hurdles. Airlines typically tie frequent flier miles to individual travelers, while frequent travel takes employees away from home without really compensating them for time away from family and the normal frustrations of air travel, he said.

"None of that is in any way compensated through one's normal salary, and frequent flier miles have historically been seen as a way of compensating business travelers for that," Winship said.

Winship said it's an uncomfortable stretch for Moliga to call government travel a privilege.

"At the very least, you can expect there to be a lot of disgruntled passengers ? a lot of disgruntled (American Samoa) employees," Winship said. "Calling travel on business a privilege, you're going to get some pretty frequent pushback from travelers on that characterization."

Moliga said Hawaiian Airlines agreed to create a corporate account for the territory to deposit all miles for flights paid for by the territory's government.

Hawaiian Airlines, owned by Hawaiian Holdings Inc., declined comment to The Associated Press, referring questions to the American Samoa government. Shares of Hawaiian Holdings were unchanged Wednesday at $5.50 per share.

The new policy comes four years after a territorial lawmaker tried to introduce legislation for a similar arrangement to provide funding for a referral program to send patients off the islands from American Samoa's only hospital, which is publicly run. The program has gone without funding since 2008. Since then, patients who need medical care outside American Samoa have had to pay their own airfare and hospital care through private insurance or Medicaid.

Biographer regrets affair with former CIA director

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) ? The biographer whose extramarital affair with then-CIA director David Petraeus triggered his resignation says she regrets the relationship and the harm and grief it caused her family.

Paula Broadwell told WSOC-TV in Charlotte on Thursday (http://bit.ly/10RjHXE ) that she credited her husband and friends for standing by her as she rebuilds her life six months after her relationship with the married Petraeus was revealed by an FBI investigation and ignited a political firestorm. TV crews camped out front of her family home for days and Broadwell went into seclusion. The couple has two young children.

"I have remorse for the harm, sadness that this has caused in my family and other families and for causes that we belong to," Broadwell said. "I'm blessed with family, community. That's been a great part of my rehabilitation and wonderful organizations that realize that even if you've made mistakes you can pick up dust off and move on."

Broadwell spoke briefly last month with a reporter outside a Charlotte prayer breakfast, but Thursday was her first in-depth media interview since the scandal broke. Broadwell is a U.S. Army reserve officer who met then-Gen. Petraeus while researching a book about his wartime leadership in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The affair came to light after Broadwell sent vaguely threatening emails to a Florida socialite she viewed as a rival for his attention. That woman, Jill Kelly, showed the emails to an acquaintance who is an FBI agent.

For his part, Petraeus made similar comments in March in a speech at an event for soldiers in California, saying he was sorry for the affair and the pain it caused his wife, family, friends and supporters.

"Needless to say, I join you keenly aware that I am regarded in a different light now than I was a year ago," said Petraeus, who retired as a four-star general before being named by President Obama to head the CIA in 2011. "I am also keenly aware that the reason for my recent journey was my own doing."

Broadwell spends much of her time now working with local organizations in the Charlotte area that help returning veterans and wounded warriors with finding jobs and housing. Broadwell said working with soldiers struggling to overcome visible and invisible wounds serves as therapy for her, as well.

"I'm not focused on the past, I'm not dwelling on it," she said. "It was a devastating thing for our family and we still have some healing to do, but we're very focused now on how can we continue to contribute and use this for the greater good, too."

Dead Pa. baby's dad believes in 'divine healing'

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? After their 2-year-old son died of untreated pneumonia in 2009, faith-healing advocates Herbert and Catherine Schaible promised a judge they would not let another sick child go without medical care.

But now they've lost an 8-month-old to what a prosecutor called "eerily similar" circumstances. And instead of another involuntary manslaughter charge, they're now charged with third-degree murder.

"We believe in divine healing, that Jesus shed blood for our healing and that he died on the cross to break the devil's power," Herbert Schaible, 44, told Philadelphia homicide detectives after their ninth child, Brandon, died in April. Medicine, he said, "is against our religious beliefs."

The Schaibles were ordered held without bail Friday, two days after their arrest, although defense lawyers argued that they are neither a flight risk nor a danger to the community.

"He is incarcerated because of his faith," said lawyer Bobby Hoof, who described client Herbert Schaible's mindset as resolute.

"He's strong willed," Hoof said. "(Yet) he's mourning this son. He's hurting as any dad would."

The only people theoretically at risk are the couple's seven surviving children, who are now in foster care, the lawyers said.

A judge acknowledged that the couple had never missed a court date in the first case but said he worried that might change amid the more serious charges. And he feared they may have supporters who would harbor them.

"Throughout this country ... there are churches like the Schaibles' whose members and leaders probably don't think they did anything wrong and might be willing ? to paraphrase the Schaibles' pastor ? to put their interpretation of God's will above the law," Common Pleas Judge Benjamin Lerner said.

About a dozen children die each year in the U.S. when parents turn to faith healing instead of medicine, typically from highly treatable problems, said Shawn Francis Peters, a University of Wisconsin lecturer who has studied faith-healing deaths.

In Oregon, four couples from a faith-healing church have been prosecuted, the most recent in 2011 when a couple was sentenced to more than six years in prison for manslaughter in the death of their newborn son.

The state legislature that year removed faith healing as a defense to murder charges. Members of the Followers of Christ have consistently refused to speak with journalists.

Defense lawyer Mark Cogan declined to comment Friday on whether the legal actions have changed the practice of any church members. Some testified at the 2011 trial that they do get medical care.

At the Schaibles' sentencing in February 2011 in their son Kent's death, they agreed to follow terms of the 10-year probation, which included an order to get their children regular checkups and sick visits as needed. Catherine Schaible, 43, let her husband speak for her and never addressed the judge.

"It's very clear that the law says that religious freedom is trumped by the safety of a child," Common Pleas Judge Carolyn Engel Temin explained.

But a transcript of a later probation hearing that year shows probation officers were confused by their mandate to oversee the required medical care and felt powerless to carry it out. The family was not being monitored by child-welfare workers, who are more accustomed to dealing with medical compliance.

"I think that we all on the jury thought that it would not happen again, that whatever social and legal institutions needed to be involved in their situation would just take over ... and that the mandated visits would be robust enough that they would not be able to do this again," Vincent Bertolini, a former college professor who served as jury foreman at the Schaibles' first trial, said Friday.

That jury convicted the couple of involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment.

Like other cases Peters has studied, the Schaibles belong to a small, insular circle of believers. Both are third-generation members and former teachers at their fundamentalist Christian church, the First Century Gospel Church in northeast Philadelphia.

Their pastor, Nelson Clark, has said the Schaibles lost their sons because of a "spiritual lack" in their lives and insisted they would not seek medical care even if another child appeared near death. He did not return phone messages this month, but he told The Associated Press in 2011 that his church is not a cult, and he faulted officials for trying to force his members into "the flawed medical system," which he blamed for 100,000 deaths a year.

"These are people who have been brought up in these communities; their beliefs are reinforced every day," Peters said. "They're not trained intellectually to question these doctrines, where the rest of us might engage in critical inquiry, weighing the benefits of medicine versus the benefits of prayer."

A handful of families, including one in western Pennsylvania, have lost two children after attempts at faith healing, according to Peters, who wrote "When Prayer Fails: Faith Healing, Children and the Law."

Peters isn't sure that courts have the means to prevent the problem, since such people don't fear legal punishment, only Judgment Day. Some believe death "is a good outcome," given their belief in the afterlife, he said.

"They don't want to harm their children. They're just in this particularly narrow ? and very, very dangerous ? way misguided about the potential of medical science," he said.

He believes that "empathetic" intervention, through dialogue between church and public health educators, could help some "get to a point where they allow their beliefs and practices to evolve."

But there's a risk that could backfire, and drive these communities further underground, he said.

For the Schaibles, a third-degree murder conviction could bring seven to 14 years in prison or more.

Said Assistant District Attorney Joanne Pescatore: "Somebody is dead now as a result of what they did ? or didn't do."

New technique may open up an era of atomic-scale semiconductor devices

May 22, 2013 ? Researchers at North Carolina State University have developed a new technique for creating high-quality semiconductor thin films at the atomic scale -- meaning the films are only one atom thick. The technique can be used to create these thin films on a large scale, sufficient to coat wafers that are two inches wide, or larger.

"This could be used to scale current semiconductor technologies down to the atomic scale -- lasers, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), computer chips, anything," says Dr. Linyou Cao, an assistant professor of materials science and engineering at NC State and senior author of a paper on the work. "People have been talking about this concept for a long time, but it wasn't possible. With this discovery, I think it's possible."

The researchers worked with molybdenum sulfide (MoS2), an inexpensive semiconductor material with electronic and optical properties similar to materials already used in the semiconductor industry. However, MoS2 is different from other semiconductor materials because it can be "grown" in layers only one atom thick without compromising its properties.

In the new technique, researchers place sulfur and molybdenum chloride powders in a furnace and gradually raise the temperature to 850 degrees Celsius, which vaporizes the powder. The two substances react at high temperatures to form MoS2. While still under high temperatures, the vapor is then deposited in a thin layer onto the substrate.

"The key to our success is the development of a new growth mechanism, a self-limiting growth," Cao says. The researchers can precisely control the thickness of the MoS2 layer by controlling the partial pressure and vapor pressure in the furnace. Partial pressure is the tendency of atoms or molecules suspended in the air to condense into a solid and settle onto the substrate. Vapor pressure is the tendency of solid atoms or molecules on the substrate to vaporize and rise into the air.

To create a single layer of MoS2 on the substrate, the partial pressure must be higher than the vapor pressure. The higher the partial pressure, the more layers of MoS2 will settle to the bottom. If the partial pressure is higher than the vapor pressure of a single layer of atoms on the substrate, but not higher than the vapor pressure of two layers, the balance between the partial pressure and the vapor pressure can ensure that thin-film growth automatically stops once the monolayer is formed. Cao calls this "self-limiting" growth.

Partial pressure is controlled by adjusting the amount of molybdenum chloride in the furnace -- the more molybdenum is in the furnace, the higher the partial pressure.

"Using this technique, we can create wafer-scale MoS2 monolayer thin films, one atom thick, every time," Cao says. "We can also produce layers that are two, three or four atoms thick."

Cao's team is now trying to find ways to create similar thin films in which each atomic layer is made of a different material. Cao is also working to create field-effect transistors and LEDs using the technique. Cao has filed a patent on the new technique.

Road to Africa begins in Italy for NY Army National Guard

To prepare for participation for Exercise Central Accord 14,
369th Sustainment Brigade Commander Col. Reginald Sanders from New York Army National Guard traveled to Vicenza, Italy recently to share lessons learned from their participation in last year's Central Accord (CA13) in Cameroon.

Sanders and four of his key leaders joined 11 officers from eight partner nations and organizations to share lessons learned from CA13 at a conference conducted by U.S. Army Africa (USARAF)

"This is an opportunity to look at what we accomplished earlier this year and improve on the processes we used," said Jerry Madden, USARAF planning officer for Central Accord 14.

Sanders said Central Accord 14 will build on the the experience the brigade gained during Atlas Accord 12 in Mali and CA 13 in Cameroon; i.e., specialized skills shared in areas of command and control; logistics movement, medical evacuation; and strengthen international partnerships.

Their proven ability to move, supply and maintain troops in austere regions around the world brings unique qualifications and expertise in sustainment operations to the USARAF team in Central Africa. Our focus as we move into the exercise is learning our partner nations' culture and processes and how these impact how they conduct operations," Sanders explained. "This knowledge allows us to quickly form effective teams and increase working relations with our nation partners," he said.

During CA 14, 369th Sustainment Bde. plans to send 70 Soldiers to Cameroon to train alongside African military forces and partner nations' to receive, stage, move and supply approximately 1,000 military personnel from several countries scheduled to train during the three-week exercise.

Countries participating in the workshop included Cameroon, Congo, Chad, Gabon, Nigeria, Burundi and Brazil. USARAF will use this as an opportunity to share expertise and experience of all participating forces from all levels.

"It's important to begin the planning process early to identify how each nation operates in the areas of logistics, communications and operational command and control at both the tactical and strategic levels," Madden said. "Because each country's military works differently, identifying these aspects early will help bridge gaps between all partner nations and address these issues prior to the exercise," he added.

This is yet another milestone for the 369th Sustainment Bde. Headquartered in Harlem, New York, the brigade traces its history back to the 369th Infantry Regiment, an African-American unit that fought in World War I. The regiment earned more French Croix de Guerre medals than any other American unit and became known as the "Harlem Hellfighters."

(AP) ? Stocks fell in early trading, extending a sell-off that began Wednesday afternoon, after Chinese manufacturing unexpectedly contracted and on concern that the Federal Reserve may ease back on its stimulus program.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 50 points at 15,256 as of 10:28 a.m., a decline of 0.3 percent. It had been down 127 points in the early going following steep losses in European and Japanese markets.

The minutes from the latest Fed meeting released Wednesday indicated that several policymakers are leaning toward slowing the central bank's bond-buying program. That program has been keeping interest rates low and encouraging investors to buy risky assets like stocks.

The Dow is still up 16.4 percent so far this year as hiring and the housing market pick up and as U.S. corporations turn in record profits.

Investors were also disappointed Thursday by a report that showed manufacturing in China, the world's No. 2 economy, unexpectedly shrank this month. China's booming economy has been a major driver of global growth in recent years and investors worry when they see signs that it's slowing down.

Global stock markets fell sharply on Thursday, starting in Asia where the benchmark Nikkei index fell 7.3 percent after Japanese government bond yields spiked and news was released about the slowdown in Chinese manufacturing. The sell-off extended to Europe where Germany's DAX index, which has been at a record high, slid 2.7 percent.

In other U.S. stock trading, the Standard & Poor's 500 index was down 9 points to 1,646, or 0.5 percent. The Nasdaq composite was down eight points at 3,454, or 0.2 percent.

In commodities trading, the price of crude oil slipped $1.42, or 1.5 percent, to $92.87 a barrel. Gold rose $18, or 1.3 percent, to $1,385.30 an ounce. The dollar fell against the euro and the yen.

In U.S. government bond trading, the yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 2.02 percent to 2.04 percent.

Among stocks making big moves, Ralph Lauren fell $5.37 to $182.69, a loss of 3 percent. The apparel seller reported revenue that fell short of what financial analysts were expecting. Sluggish economic conditions and the decision to cut certain businesses reduced sales.

PC maker Hewlett-Packard bucked the downward trend. The stock surged $2.95, or 14 percent, to $24.16, after the company delivered second-quarter earnings that topped the estimates of both its own management and the analysts who influence investor perceptions.
