How Sandy compares to worst US natural disasters

The damage caused by superstorm Sandy in the United States is still being catalogued. But so far, it seems the storm will enter the pantheon of top disasters the country has ever faced.

"Make no mistake about it, this is a devastating storm, maybe the worst we have ever experienced," New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Tuesday.

Flooding caused major damage along the East Coast, but wind and fire contributed, too. According to Bloomberg, a single fire in Queens caused by the storm destroyed more than 80 homes. As of Tuesday afternoon, the storm's U.S. death toll was at least 40, and more than 8.2 million people remained without power.

Storm deaths
With its urban flooding, Sandy brought to mind Katrina, the Category 5 hurricane that struck the Gulf Coast in 2005. Rains from Katrina overwhelmed Louisiana's levee system, inundating New Orleans with water. However, Katrina's death toll dwarfed Sandy's, with the National Hurricane Center putting the death toll from that storm at 1,833.

Earlier storms have been even deadlier: A massive storm hit Galveston, Texas in 1900 and killed at least 8,000 people. And in 1928, the Lake Okeechobee, Fla., hurricane killed more than 2,500, according to the National Hurricane Center. Two other storms, both in 1893, may also have killed more people each than Katrina. [ The 10 Worst U.S. Natural Disasters ]

Other disasters
Storms aren't the only disasters to hit highly populated areas. In 1906, the Great San Francisco Earthquake struck California's Bay Area. The quake, an estimated 7.7- to 7.9-magnitude, was destructive enough, but even worse was the fire that followed, sparked by broken gas lines. About 3,000 people died, and 225,000 were made homeless by the blaze.

Other disasters are known not for their death toll, but for their cost. The Northridge earthquake, a magnitude-6.7 quake that struck Los Angeles in 1994, killed 58 people, according to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and the destruction caused by the quake ended up costing at least $25 billion (in 1994 dollars), according to initial Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) reports. A 1998 study of the quake by Caltech researchers suggested that if indirect economic losses were included, the quake cost could reach $40 billion.

Hurricane Katrina caused an estimated $108 billion in damage, according to a 2005 National Hurricane Center report.?

Where Sandy does stand out is in meteorological records. The storm surge pushed water to a record 13.88 feet at Battery Park, N.Y., beating a previous record of 10.02 feet set by Hurricane Donna in 1960 in the same place.

The storm broke pressure records as well, with the barometer hitting record low or near-record low pressures in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland. In Atlantic City, N.J., for example, the pressure hit 948 millibars, topping a previous record of 961 mb set in 1932. (A typical low-pressure system usually hits around 1,000 mb.)

Sandy was also extremely large, even for a hurricane. At its peak, the storm's hurricane-force winds extended 175 miles from its center, with tropical storm-force winds felt 520 miles away. That puts Sandy at No. 2 in terms of shear size since 1988, according to Weather Underground. The only storm that beats it in size is 2001's Hurricane Olga, a late-season storm that did not make landfall.?

Scientists find aphid resistance in black raspberry

This release is available in Spanish.

There's good news for fans of black raspberries: A U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) scientist and his commercial colleague have found black raspberries that have resistance to a disease-spreading aphid.

Agricultural Research Service (ARS) horticulturist Chad Finn with the agency's Horticultural Crops Research Unit in Corvallis, Ore., and colleague Michael Dossett of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada are the first to find and report black raspberry resistance to the large raspberry aphid.

ARS is USDA's chief intramural scientific research agency, and this research supports the USDA priority of promoting international food security.

The researchers screened seedlings from 132 wild black raspberry populations for aphid resistance. According to Finn, strong resistance was found in three of these populationsone each from Ontario, Maine, and Michigan. Aphid resistance in the Ontario and Maine populations seems to be controlled by multiple genes, while resistance in the Michigan population is governed by one dominant gene.

Identifying these genes makes it easier for breeders to incorporate aphid resistance into commercial black raspberry cultivars.

Aphid control is important because fruit production is severely impacted by black raspberry necrosis virus, which is transmitted by the large raspberry aphid. This and other aphids are important virus vectors in North American black raspberries.

Although breeding for aphid resistance has been recognized as an important tool for protecting red raspberries from viral infection, this is the first report of aphid resistance in black raspberry, according to Finn.

Daniel's Law Passes in Pennsylvania to Ban Gassing Animals in ...

Daniel's Law Passes in Pennsylvania to Ban Gassing Animals in Shelters
Pennsylvania Senator Andrew Dinniman helped to shepherd Daniel's Law in his state, others will hopefully soon follow

I'm not sure that most people are aware of how animals in some shelters in some states are killed (euthanized is too kind a word) - they go into gas chambers and where carbon monoxide is used. Most of the time, animals with their expiration date are just brought in, cats with dogs, large dogs with small dogs, etc. The end happens.

It's not instant....those who do this work report animals screaming.

But ultimately the end happens - usually.

One dog who survived was Daniel. You can read Daniel's story here.

Joe Dwyer - wo adopted Daniel - has criss-crossed America attempting to ban gassing animals, and instead opt for ?euthanasia by injection (the same way endings occur for our beloved pets). Not only is this more humane, and less expensive but also it's simply the right thing to do....these shelter animals have done nothing wrong - the tragedy goes further than they "need" to die - it's how they die.

Pennsylvania is now among the states banning euthanasia by injection.

Hear my Steve Dale's Pet World interview with Dwyer and Senator Andrew Dinniman (D-Chester).

Here's a part of the press release from the American Humane?Association:

WASHINGTON, D.C., October 25, 2012 ? American Humane Association issued the following statement applauding Governor Tom Corbett?s signing of Pennsylvania H.B. 2630, banning the use of gas chambers to euthanize shelter animals:

?American Humane Association applauds Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett for signing H.B. 2630 into law.? The bill initially introduced by Senator Andrew Dinniman (D-Chester) and shepherded through the House by Representative John Maher, Chair of the House Agriculture Committee, outlaws the deplorable use of gas chambers to end the lives of homeless cats and dogs, the most cruel and inhumane practice imaginable. The measure, which calls for the use of established injectable euthanasia drugs administered only by licensed and certified individuals to ensure that these helpless and frightened animals do not needlessly face prolonged suffering and distress, received overwhelming bi-partisan support in both the Pennsylvania House and Senate.

?Each year, millions of dogs and cats face a prolonged and painful death in gas chambers, and rarely has an animal survived.? However, in an amazing survival story, Daniel, a young beagle emerged from an Alabama gas chamber that killed 18 of his four-legged compatriots in October 2011, still wagging his tail.? His story is the inspiration for this law. Today, Daniel is happily living in a forever home on the East Coast.? His remarkable story received worldwide media attention and he has used his new-found celebrity to advocate for shelter adoptions and anti-gassing laws in state legislatures across the country.? Named American Humane Association?s Emerging Hero Dog, he is the inspiration for H.B. 2630, also known as ?Daniel?s Law.?

KCT Credit Union to help fight breast cancer with Denim Day

KCT Credit Union is going ?Denim for a Day? on Friday. The event will celebrate Lee National Denim Day, a fundraiser created by Lee Jeans in which companies allow employees to dress casually for a day in exchange for a donation to the American Cancer Society.

?Our employees are always interested in participating in more charitable causes,? said Kristine Kowalski, vice president of marketing for KCT Credit Union, in a news release.

?Lee National Denim Day is easy and fun to do. Everyone gets to wear jeans to work in exchange for a donation, and the money helps fight breast cancer, a cause that is very important to many of our employees.?

The net proceeds from Lee National Denim Day will support the American Cancer Society?s community-based programs, including screenings for breast cancer.

They also will go toward Hope Lodge, which provides cancer patients and their families with a free place
to stay when they have to travel for breast cancer treatment.

Those who want to help the American Cancer Society can donate to the KCT Credit Union Lee National Denim Day effort.

?In addition to stopping by our Elgin, Geneva or Aurora offices, the community may make donations to Lee National Denim Day by accessing KCT?s fundraising team page at kctcu.org,? Kowalski said.

Nissan recalls new Altima in U.S. on loose steering bolts

(Reuters) - Nissan Motor Co is recalling 13,919 of its top-selling Altima sedans in the United States because bolts that may not have been tightened properly during production could fall off, increasing the risk of a crash, according to U.S. safety regulators.

The Altima sedans are from the from the 2012 and 2013 model years and were made at the Nissan plant in Canton, Mississippi, from May 10 to July 26, Nissan North America told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"Some of the subject vehicles may have been manufactured with four transverse link bolts and two power steering rack bolts that were not torqued to the proper specification," Nissan told regulators in a letter NHTSA showed on its website.

As a result, the bolts may shake loose during driving, the letter states, and drivers may notice rattling noise.

There was no mention of any injuries or crashes as a result of this issue on the NHTSA website.

Through September, in the U.S. market, 27 percent of the vehicles Nissan sold were Altima sedans.

Altima sales through September were up 17 percent from last year, at 234,040.

Altima owners will be asked to bring their cars into Nissan dealerships, where the bolts will be torqued to the proper specification, NHTSA said. The cars are under warranty protection.

"Based on engineering judgment, it was determined that if a loose bolt falls out completely, the driver may experience difficulty in controlling the direction of the vehicle," Nissan told NHTSA.

Nissan said that on July 26, the last day the vehicles involved in the recall were produced with the potential problem at the Canton plant, workers noticed the issue during a routine test.

On September 21, Nissan confirmed that some of the subject vehicles were at its dealers. On October 3, it decided a safety defect existed and a recall would be conducted.

Owners will begin to be notified on October 29, Nissan told NHTSA.

Suspect leave abuse? - Business Management Daily

Absenteeism is a big problem for many employers. If you suspect that some employees are taking advantage of your leave programs, you can and should come up with a plan to catch them, as one employer recently did.

Recent case: Daryl?s employer approved him for intermittent FMLA leave to care for his mother, who was in a nursing home.

To combat a persistent absenteeism problem, the employer came up with a plan to check up on absent employees, including those taking intermittent FMLA leave. The program sent investigators into the field, targeting a select group of 35 employees who had more unplanned absences than the company average.

One day, Daryl called in to take intermittent leave. Surveillance showed he never left his house. He was terminated for abusing his leave.

Daryl sued, alleging interference with FMLA leave.

In court documents, he said he did see his mother that day. He claimed he left by the back door. To explain why no cars left his driveway, he said his brother picked him up. When asked why the nursing home logs didn?t match his claim they picked his mother up in the morning, he claimed the records were wrong.

An unconvinced court tossed out his lawsuit. It concluded that it wouldn?t matter whether the employer was actually right about the incident. What mattered was that it honestly believed Daryl had abused his leave. (Scruggs v. Carrier Corporation, No. 11-3420, 7th Cir., 2012)

Brasserie Malmaison Review | A Girl Has to Eat - Restaurant ...

The Malmaison Hotel in Clerkenwell has a lovely little spot overlooking the adorable greens of Charterhouse Square. A self-styled luxury hotel, the Victorian exterior of the hotel is charming and inviting. The limited road access to the hotel also helps to ensure low noise levels.

Once inside, you hit the lobby, and to the right are stairs leading down to the brasserie in the basement. In contrast to the exterior, the restaurant?s d?cor looked tired and the lighting could have been better.

We started with a reasonably priced Cornish crab starter (?9.50). There was a lovely fresh, sweetness in the crab which had been dressed with a mint and shallot dressing. However deep-fried avocado fritters proved bland. The dish would have worked better with a no-frills simple accompaniment of ripe avocado.

Crab salad

Crab salad

From the specials, squid with chorizo (?6.95) went down less well. Containing both deep-fried and grilled squid, the former was tender whereas the latter was overdone and chewy. Furthermore, the chorizo did not pack a deep smoky flavour.

Squid with chorizo

Squid with chorizo

I usually dread ordering chicken at a restaurant as it typically lends itself to being overdone. But the half roasted Normandy chicken (?14.95) proved to be rather moist and tasty. The accompanying bread sauce was bland however, and there was a hint of bitterness in the roasting juices.

Half roasted chicken

Half roasted chicken

C?te de boeuf (400gm) ? dry aged prime rib steak served on the bone (?27.95) was tender and satisfying. But being quite thinly cut, it erred more on the side of medium than the requested medium rare. Nevertheless, the steak was of a great quality and very tasty.

C?te de boeuf

C?te de boeuf

Sides of steamed spinach, grilled garlic & chilli flat cap mushroom, young carrots with chervil butter (all ?3.25) were all nicely done.

Sticky toffee pudding (?6.95) with a pecan caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream was rather yummy. The caramel sauce was rich, sweet and decadent and really hit the spot.

Sticky toffee pudding

Sticky toffee pudding

On the whole, the food at Malmaison Brasserie was nicely done and tasty, if somewhat uninspired. The restaurant also lacked for atmosphere so it doesn?t make for a destination restaurant. But if I were staying at the hotel and looking for somewhere convenient to eat, I would have no qualms eating at the Brasserie either. We found the table service attentive, but the bar service less so.

Food rating: 3/5
Service: 3/5

Price range: About ?28 ? ?48 per head. Excludes drinks and service.

The HTC DLX, batteries and you

Android Central

We'd never turn down more juice, but is 2500 mAh on a 5-inch device really that low?

Yesterday we brought you the first photos of HTC and Verizon's 5-inch, 1080p Android smartphone, codenamed "DLX," along with a full list of specifications. By any standard, the DLX is a super-high-end phone, packing a quad-core Snapdragon S4 CPU -- generally considered to be the fastest SoC around -- and the highest-resolution phone display available, in the form of a 1080p SuperLCD3 panel. Throw in Verizon's 4G LTE network, and you've got an awful lot of telephone.

One area that's easy for some to find fault with, however, is the battery. Read on to find out why.

EUROPA - PRESS RELEASES - Press Release - Karel De Gucht ...

SPEECH/11/631

Karel De Gucht

European Commissioner for Trade

The State of Play of the EU-Mercosur Trade Negotiations

EU-Brazil Business Summit

Brussels, 4 October 2011

Chairman, Ladies and gentlemen,

It is a great pleasure for me to take part in this event today.

We are all facing economic challenges at home: the EU is working to support the Euro and you in Brazil are concerned about your manufacturing base being eroded by currency movements.

In such circumstances, we must use trade as a motor for growth. Trade ? fuelled in particular by the dynamism in South America ? can provide new export and investment opportunities.

And as we all know one of the main avenues for improving the EU-Brazil trade environment is the EU-Mercosur Association Agreement.

The EU is fully committed to conclude a balanced and ambitious trade agreement with Mercosur. The finalisation of the negotiation is a priority.

An agreement would bring considerable benefits for our two regions. It would create one of the largest free trade areas in the world with over 700 million people.

For EU exporters, investors and service providers, this would mean improved access to a large, dynamic and still relatively protected market. Mercosur is already our 8th most important export market, above India (? 41 bn of exports in 2010). Given the dynamism of its economy (its GDP grew by 7.5% in 2010) this trend is likely to continue. According to a recent study carried out for the Commission, the potential benefits of an ambitious agreement with Mercosur would amount to an increase in European GDP by ?14.7 to ?21.4 bn (2007 prices) and would result in a doubling of bilateral exports.

In addition, this negotiation will not only lower tariffs for trade in goods but will also result in improved market access in services/investment and public procurement, and better rules in areas such as intellectual property rights or technical barriers to trade.

The potential value of an agreement is therefore huge and as Business Europe and CNI, the Brazilian Business Federation, recently reminded in a joint letter, such an agreement would "create thousands of jobs over the next few years in both regions".

For Mercosur, a balanced and ambitious free trade agreement will mean better market access to the EU. And the EU is already the first trade partner of Mercosur, so the potential is huge.

Despite what you might think with the current talk of bailouts and austerity budgets, Europe remains a great place to do business.

We might be 27 different countries but we are a single market with one set of rules for all. We have 500 million consumers, the world's largest single market and a very affluent market that looks for quality goods. Our legal investment framework is not only one of the most secure, but also one of the most open in the world.

Europeans are already happy drinking Brazilian fruit juice or catching planes made by Embraer. But we are also interested in a broad basket of goods and services from Brazil and Mercosur as a whole. Just as Volkswagen and Fiat cars are a common sight on the streets of Sao Paulo, we can open up opportunities for European and South American goods to become household names in each others markets.

You only have to look at some of the world's best loved beers (Stella Artois, Leffe, Hoegaarden, Beck's, Bass) to realise what can emerge from the combination of a Belgian company (Interbrew) and a Brazilian company (AmBev).

You, as leading businesses from Brazil and from Europe, understand better than most the importance of open markets and possibilities of globalisation. You know better than anyone what the negotiations on a new trade agreement could bring.

Brazilian companies have a special role to play, coming from as the main economic power in the region. You know the major benefits at stake in this agreement in terms of increasing exports and by adding value. In many respects, the EU is your perfect partner: our economies are complementary. We do not represent the same competitive threat for light manufacturing than some of the Asian giants. The EU can offer opportunities for moving up the value chain based on innovation and technological advances.

As you are in favour of the EU-Mercosur trade deal, I would urge you to make those views heard. I know that Business Europe and CNI are strong supporters of the trade agreement and believe it will create thousands of jobs. But we are at a delicate stage of negotiations ? with some voices critical of the competition it might bring. So it is important that those of you who stand to gain from such a trade deal are vocal in your support. Associations such as for example EUBrazil or the EU-Mercosur Business Forum have a key role to play in this respect as they are best placed to mobilise the support of the business community on both sides of the Atlantic.

Let me also stress another important point. In the current global economic context it is crucial that we all avoid resorting to protectionist measures while we are negotiating this agreement. The world economy is going through a major crisis which we will not solve if we start working in isolation to protect our domestic markets from outside competition. Protectionism is not the solution. I am concerned by some protectionist measures taken over recent months, for examples the measures on import licences in Argentina or the recently announced Brazilian measures on taxation for the car industry which discriminates against imports.

In the context of the EU-MERCOSUR negotiations both sides will need to make concessions in order to reach an agreement. If one side takes restrictive measures during the negotiations, this is against the free trade agreement spirit. It will therefore be even more difficult for us to ask our constituencies to accept those concessions.

Ladies and gentlemen,

Regional integration, the development of an internal market and a commitment to the global trading system have brought success to Europe for more than half a century and we hope that Mercosur will also follow this road.

The EU-Mercosur trade negotiations are set to harness a lot of the complementarities between our two blocs. The benefits are potentially enormous. But we need the active and vocal support of the business community to bring this agreement to life.

Thank you for your attention.

Live A Younger Life - DRENCHED Fitness

Many individuals pursue a fit lifestyle so that they can lose weight, build strength and endurance, and otherwise keep their body healthy. But, the advantage of living a healthy life is also related to being able to live a younger life.

What exercise does for your body

Southern California Westlake Village fitness center provides a happy and social environment for all their patronsOn a physiological scale, physical activity does something very unique to the body. Regular activity helps generate more telomere-stabilizing proteins, which protect against cell death. The more active you are, the younger your body stays, which is perhaps one of the most beneficial advantages anyone could imagine. The longevity of cellular life also helps reduce risk factors of heart disease, so you can live younger, longer.

Additionally, exercise helps you feel younger too by keeping your body strong, joints well lubricated, and mind vitalized. Individuals who practice an active lifestyle experience boosts in quality of sleep as well. The mind is able to stay healthy, keeping you feeling great and ready to accomplish your goals.

What does it take to live younger?

What can you do to keep yourself younger though? Are there any particular exercises that one must incorporate into their fitness plans? Is it really as easy and simple as exercise, or is there more?

In truth, any activity is good in general. Any dose is better than none at all. But in most cases, aerobic activities tend to have the best effect on youth by keeping oxygen levels high in the blood stream and ensuring quality circulation throughout the body. When it comes to activity, any method by which you improve circulation will improve your body?s ability to retain its youth.

Finding the right exercise for you

However, it is up to you to discover what would make your exercise experience fun for you. Don?t make your fitness goals a struggle to achieve. Make them enjoyable so that you will want to get out there and pursue a healthy lifestyle. What is fun for you? Do you enjoy a particular sport? What types of motivations would you need in order to pursue an active lifestyle?

Consider the value of participating in a social environment and being able to share the experience. An exercise environment focused on keeping the participants moving with an upbeat, enjoyable atmosphere is a popular practice of Westlake Village fitness locations. Here, you can easily find the motivation and direction needed to ensure that not only will you stay active but that you will want to stay active.

Maintaining an active lifestyle doesn?t just apply to fitness goals though. It also concerns the simple daily tasks that fill our everyday lives. Walks in the park, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, and many other little things you can do that would keep your body active can help, even in small portions at a time. Consider some of the conveniences that allow you to be a little ?lazier? during the day. There is still the value of time to consider, so don?t make yourself unnecessarily late for a business meeting. Discover what tasks you can turn into activities and plan to adjust your lifestyle to incorporate them.

Keeping yourself energized

Activity alone will not suffice though. There is also the importance of diet that will keep the body fueled and vitalized so that you can remain active.

Have you ever eaten a bunch of donuts and then experienced a drop in energy? It is possible to eat food but gain no value from it. In some cases, it can even hinder your physical abilities, building cholesterol or depleting nutrition from your body. Eating a healthy diet keeps your body energized for activity, and it?s important to educate yourself about healthy eating habits in order to maintain an active lifestyle. Numerous Southern California fitness facilities are renowned for incorporating dietary education into their exercise programs. This is because it is crucial that one understand that both exercise and diet work together in order to achieve well-being.

Additionally, there is also the importance of keeping up with your blood sugar and blood pressure levels, and maintaining a healthy weight in order to improve your body?s well-being. These factors play an essential role in the health of your body, whether or not you can see them physically.

There is a ?fountain of youth,? and it lies within each of us to seek out in our own specific method of exercise. Regular exercise combined with the right nutrition will help keep your body energized and youthful for years to come.

My fresh start to archiving our family memories.... Plus a giveaway!

I have had a few people ask if there has ever been any regrets since starting this lovely little space that I like to call "home" in Blogland and I my answer has always been a big, fat, huge "YES!"?

I stopped posting on our family blog when I started this blog.

Up until starting my Mommy by day- Crafter by night, I was so diligent at posting a few times per week on our family blog, with big plans to have my blog printed into books to have for our family.?
To be honest, with all of the time that I put into this blog and time spent of the computer, the last thing I wanna do with any spare time is spend more time on the computer loading pictures and writing up more posts... so I just quit worrying about it. I know that I could have been doing other things to record memories like writing in my journal or scrapbooking, but once I got a little behind, it seemed too overwhelming to try and catch up. One thing led to another and I found myself over a year and a half behind and feeling guilty as heck that my "craft blog" had taken precedence over my duty as "Family Archivist". ;)

The guilt has eaten away at me little by little until I finally decided to do something about it.?

A few months ago I was telling my friend about my current situation and guilt at failing in the "recording my kids life" category. She listened to everything I had to say- excuses and all- and said "Hang on... I think I have the solution for you!" She left the room and came back a minute later holding a book/binder. She spent the next 30 minutes showing and telling me about her method of recording memories and storing family photos: PROJECT LIFE.?I was amazed at how easy it seemed and started feeling an inkling of HOPE at somehow being able to get back on top of everything. I came home and started doing some of my own research on Project Life. I was so excited to find out that the woman behind the genius, was none other than THE Becky Higgins- someone who I have been a huge fan of ever since I started scrapbooking years ago. The more I read about Project Life, the more I was convinced that it was the perfect system for me and my needs.?

As you guys know, I try to keep my blog free of product reviews unless it is a product that I really feel passionate about. I had a feeling that Project Life was something that was manageable enough for me and that would also take away the guilt that I was feeling over memory keeping.?So I contacted the Project Life team and begged them to let me review Project Life to see how I liked it. To my excitement they agreed and kindly sent me the three things I needed to get started on my own project life journey:

No more spending hundreds of dollars on paper, stickers, glue, etc... All you need to do this is are a few things.

And even better- these few things are what make up an entire year worth of memory keeping!

If you have never heard of Project Life or are not sure how it works- here is a little video that explains the system...

What is Project Life? from Becky Higgins LLC on Vimeo.

I ended up choosing the?Amber Edition. Since getting the Amber edition, my mom in law gave me the Clementine Edition for my birthday- so now I have two albums. One to work of for the current year and one to start making up for last year. Once I received my album and supplies, I headed over and checked out the "Getting Started"?page on Becky's website... It was perfect and explained exactly what I needed to do to start my album...

Last weekend, I sat down for the very first time doing Project Life... I had 200 photos and whipped out over 4 months worth of memories in just a handful of hours. I can not tell you how awesome it felt to be able to get that much done in so little time. I used to spend countless hours perfecting one page at a time, and although it is fun looking back at all of the details and work I put into my scrapbooking, I no longer have that much spare time. So for me and my busy life, this is the perfect way for me to record memories quickly and even as memories are happening.?

I read a post by Becky on her blog a while ago, and she mentioned that she carries around a box of 3x4 inch cards in her purse and she pulls them out and writes on them while she was out and about and then later adds them to her album... Such a great idea! I ordered some cards and plan to do the same. So many times, my kids say things and I think to myself "I will write that down when I get home" and then I get home and can not remember what in the world it was that they had said! No more excuses now!?

Here are the things that I like to use in addition when putting together my book:

I just crop the corners of the pictures, put them into the book, and then write on the cards and stick them in and I am done! So easy and so fast. And although my handwriting isn't always perfect, I kinda like that extra personal touch that it is my handwriting on the cards.

Recently, Becky announced some new editions?editions of project life that are going to be coming out at the end of the year... There are baby editions,?childhood editions,?the Seafoam Edition, and brace yourselves fellow fabric lovers... Heather Bailey designed a core kit and it is called the Olive Edition... Oh my goodness! I love it! It will be released in late December... I think I may just have to buy myself a Christmas present! I can not wait to get my hands on that edition! So cute!! So for anyone out there that is passionate about keeping track of pictures and family memories- check out Project Life... It is the perfect place to start if you are wanting to start recording life's happenings, need to get caught up on past life happenings, or whatever your circumstance may be. It is so user friendly- there is no wrong or right way to?Project Life.?

Now for the exciting part....

?Becky Higgins is going to be?giving away a Project Life Binder, the coordinating Core Kit, and a Big Pack of Design A Photo Pocket Pages?to one lucky Mommy by day- Crafter by night reader!!!

The winner will get to choose which edition they receive- either the Turquoise, Clementine, Cherry, Amber, or Cobalt Edition.

All you have to do to enter is:

1. Be a follower of Mommy by day... Crafter by night. (via GFC,?RSS, or by email)
