MUSCAT ? The National Defence College has been established in response to the Royal directives of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos, the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. The institution will enhance the future vision of comprehensive development in the Sultanate. It will serve as a hub for decision-makers and high level research in strategic and defence securities studies.
The college offers one-year master?s programme during which military and civil staff will get top training to enable them to undertake leadership positions.
The college will help engage in valuable research and discussions on carrying out military exercises and associated local, regional and international activities in a highly organised manner. The college, which will be linked academically to the Sultan Qaboos University, will have a highly competent teaching staff and it will also host experts and security and defence specialists to present their experiences.
The curriculum of the college covers all the strategic concepts of defence and security, tapping the resources of those specialsed in the domestic Omani affairs, assessing current and future security challenges and perceiving expected and emerging issues, while at the same time expanding regional and international relations from the vantage point of national security.
The college will receive officers from the Sultan?s Armed Forces and other security services, in addition to senior officials from the civil sector, to prepare them to work in a joint environment to help unify efforts in a bid to better safeguard the national interests of the Sultanate.
General Sultan bin Mohammed al Numani, Minister of the Royal Office, valued the directives of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos to set up the National Defence College. He said that the college?s establishment is considered a wise Royal gesture to contribute to the general policies and develop national strategies for decision makers at the state institutions.
The Royal vision of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos made the Sultanate the focus of world appreciation and an example to follow in international relations, Gen Al Numani added.
Sayyid Badr bin Saud al Busaidy, Minister Responsible for Defence Affairs, said that the Royal attention of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos to the Armed Forces reflected in the establishment of the National Defence College. The edifice will serve the present and future needs of Oman, which already earns a prominent place in the international community due to its moderate policies and its permanent stands advocating peace, said Sayyid Badr.
The National Defence College will form a suitable ground for personnel of the Ministry of Defence and military and security wings to work alongside
civil institutions to develop the management of crises and address security and political challenges, as well as related economic and social matters, said Sayyid Badr.
Lt Gen Ahmed bin Harith al Nabhani, Chief of Staff of the Sultan?s Armed Forces, said that the Royal Decree which promulgated the National Defence College set a new start for efforts to achieve progress in military education and combine competencies for the formulation of suitable solutions.
His Majesty the Sultan?s directives to set up the college were issued in 2007 and the project was entrusted to a committee of senior military officers who work alongside other specialists to finalise the project at Bait al Falaj area in the Governorate of Muscat, following years of research.
The project was also highly appreciated by other senior military officials, including Major General Matar bin Salim al Balushi, Commander of the Royal Army of Oman, Air Vice Marshal Matar bin Ali al Obaidani, Commander of the Royal Air Force of Oman, and Rear Admiral Abdullah bin Khamis al Raisi, Commander of the Royal Navy of Oman. ?
